In a commendable display of compassion and support, the Kwara State Governor, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, has provided significant financial assistance to the traders of Owode Market, Offa, who recently suffered devastating losses due to a fire outbreak. On April 16, 2024, the Governor’s administration, through the Kwara State Emergency Management Agency (KSEMA), presented a cheque of N10 million to the affected traders. The presentation took place at the palace of the Olofa of Offa, Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi Okikiola Ajagbungbade I, Esuwoye II.
Earlier this month, the vibrant Owode Market, a commercial hub in the heart of Offa, was tragically engulfed by flames. The fire, which started in the early hours, ravaged approximately 50 shops before being brought under control by the combined efforts of the federal and state fire services. Goods worth millions of naira, including foodstuffs, charcoal, and fairly used clothes, were destroyed in the blaze.
The Offa Descendants’ Union (ODU), led by Alhaji Muhideen Olaniyi Azeez Salako, has expressed deep gratitude to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq for his swift and noble gesture. The financial support is expected to go a long way in helping the affected traders recover from their losses and rebuild their businesses.
ODU also extended its appreciation to the Federal and State Fire Services for their prompt response, which prevented further damage to the market. The Union emphasized the need for increased fire safety measures within the market to prevent future occurrences of such disasters.
In a statement, the President of ODU expressed heartfelt sympathy to the affected traders and assured them that efforts are being made to mobilize additional financial support and donations. He reiterated the Union’s commitment to standing by the traders during this challenging time and helping them get back on their feet.
The Governor’s donation is not just a relief fund; it is a beacon of hope for the traders of Owode Market, symbolizing the government’s dedication to the welfare of its citizens. The ODU and the entire Offa community are grateful for this timely intervention, which will undoubtedly aid in the recovery and revival of the market.
