The Christian journey in Offa began in 1907 when Reverend A.W. Smith, who later became a Bishop, and his wife arrived from Osogbo. As members of the Church Missionary Society (C.M.S), they set up a foundation that would reshape the town’s future. Their initial visit involved a mobile film show at the present site of the Offa Central Mosque, sparking curiosity and interest among the locals. Although their stay was brief, it planted the seeds of change.
The Return of Reverend Smith
Two years later, in 1909, Reverend Smith and his wife returned to Offa, this time making a more permanent impact. They set up camp near Ojomu Doyin compound, drawing assistance from locals like Mr. Omidele and Mr. Onawola. Their presence led to the first Sunday service, attended by curious youths, including Mr. Onawola, who soon embraced Christianity and began attending school.
Early Evangelists and Education
In 1909, Mr. E.A. Omobile from Ogbomoso arrived in Offa, conducting pastoral visits to nearby towns. After his transfer in 1910, Reverend Smith and his wife returned permanently, bringing with them Mr. Leke, a native of Osogbo, to assist in teaching. This marked the beginning of formal education in Offa, with school sessions held from 9 am to 12 noon and 2 pm to 4 pm.
Growing the Faith Community
Reverend Smith’s efforts were complemented by Mr. E.A. Adeleye, an Offa native who had converted to Christianity in Ibadan. Teachers from Osogbo frequently visited to support the burgeoning Christian community. By the end of 1909, notable converts included Kasumu, Amos Tade, Odunsi, Abimbola, Roberts, Sesilo, Thomas Adu, and Akinkunmi.
Establishing the Mission House
In 1909, the construction of the Mission House at C.M.S. Church Idi-Olufon began with support from the Oyo District Council. This structure became a symbol of the growing Christian presence in Offa. Over the years, it was expanded and developed, reflecting the community’s dedication to their faith.
Expanding Influence
By 1911, evangelists were spreading Christianity to surrounding areas like Igbajo and Oke-Ode. The arrival of Mr. E.A. Otolorin in 1912 marked the beginning of a more structured approach to education and pastoral work. His efforts were succeeded by others, including Mr. Gabriel Bolarinwa and Mr. Alfred Oyekanmi, who continued to build on the foundation laid by Reverend Smith.
The Formation of the Kwara Diocese
The influence of Christianity in Offa reached a milestone with the establishment of the Kwara Diocese on November 1st, 1974. This event elevated Saint Mark Church Offa to the status of a cathedral, making it the diocesan headquarters. Rt. Reverend Herbert Haruna was installed as the first Bishop, solidifying Offa’s role as a central hub for the Anglican faith in Kwara State.
Educational Advancements
Christianity’s contribution to education in Offa is notable. The Anglican Girls’ School was founded in 1953, later becoming Saint Clare’s Grammar School. Bishop Smith Memorial College, a Teachers Training College, was established in 1957, further enhancing educational opportunities for the community. The Offa Community Girls School, later known as the Anglican College of Commerce, also played a crucial role in advancing education.
