Afelele Reservoir, located in the Agun area bordering G.R.A in Ojomu North-North, Offa, stands as the first dam in Ibolo land. Unlike natural lakes, Afelele is an artificial reservoir formed through land excavation and dam construction to control water flow and regulate seasonal patterns of floods and low flows.<\/p>\n
The necessity for constructing Afelele arose in 1907 when the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) extended rail lines to Offa, establishing it as a terminus. During that period, locomotive engines relied solely on water as a kinetic energy source. Afelele Reservoir served as a crucial water source for these engines.<\/p>\n
Afelele is fed by precipitation, rainwater runoff, and a constant water flow from Abata and various springs. Tributaries from natural springs and streams, including Alahere in Akingbasa, Ontoki in Ile Ikolaba, and Idi Omu in Ile Lanlu, among others, contribute to Afelele. Additionally, a small stream from Ila flowing through Igosun also feeds the reservoir.<\/p>\n
To ensure a perennial water source for locomotive engines, especially during dry seasons, seven deep wells were later dug inside the reservoir. This strategic move guaranteed that by the time the seventh well was nearly drained, the rainy season would replenish the reservoir.<\/p>\n

Beyond its primary role for locomotive engines, Afelele Reservoir also plays a significant role in flood control, fishery enhancement, protection of downstream rivers, and water storage during low-flow periods.<\/p>\n
There is a vital proposal to modernize Afelele as a strategic eco-tourism site in Ibolo land. Engaging strategic stakeholders could bring this vision to life, making Afelele a focal point for tourism and environmental conservation.<\/p>\n
Decades of neglect and lack of maintenance have significantly reduced the reservoir’s volumetric storage capacity due to sediment buildup. Additionally, many natural springs feeding Afelele have dried up due to uncoordinated human activities and modernization efforts.<\/p>\n
Today, Afelele Reservoir primarily supports fishery and aquaculture activities under the management of Fatsonic Fisheries, which has established a sustainable fishery value chain around the reservoir.<\/p>\n
In case of rehabilitation, Afelele’s water can be emptied within two weeks by opening the control outlet. It can also be refilled within ten days, especially during the rainy season. Cleaning the water surface typically takes 3-4 days.<\/p>\n
Water from Afelele’s spillway flows downward to Agun Stream, eventually joining Afami Stream from Ipee and spillway water from Oyun Dam. Together, they flow through Oyun Bridge, heading towards Budo Alfa.<\/p>\n
